Relationship between Maternal Depression and Parenting Behaviors: The Mediating Effects of Irrational Beliefs in Parenting
Lee Jung-Yoon

Jang Mi-Kyung
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between maternal depression and parenting behaviors, and whether this relationship is mediated by irrational beliefs in parenting. Five hundreds and six married women in community completed questionnaires about depression, parenting behaviors and irrational beliefs in parenting for the study. The result showed that depression of mothers significantly predicted their parenting behaviors. In addition, irrational beliefs in parenting, especially negative thoughts for the child, mediated the relationships between maternal depression and parenting behaviors. However, mother¡¯s self-blame and high parenting standards did not mediate the relationships between maternal depression and parenting behaviors. The implications were discussed in relation to parental education and counseling for these women.
